Yes, it is possible for an object to experience acceleration in perpendicular direction of motion.
If a body is moving in a circular path with a constant velocity then it is possible.
Now,
During the motion the motion is circular while the acceleration acting is along the tangent as the velocity is constant and acceleration is a vector quantity.
So, direction also affects the acceleration.
