Is it possible that velocity of an object be in a direction other than the direction of acceleration?

yes ,in case of retardation,the direction of velocity and the acceleration are opposite to each other.

this is possible because both velocity and the acceleration are vector quantities.

if we take an example.that ;

if a car has a velocity x ,

at the moment,the driver had to apply the brakes to avoid the accident.

here ,the brakes tends to decrease the velocity,

in case when the velocity decreases,here actually means that the direction of acceleration is opposite to that of velocity.

if we say the the retardation is 10m per m2 that means the acceleration is -10 m per second square.
