not all the time. for eg.- if your path is somehow a circular one then the point from you start and the point where you end your motion is the distance, which depends on the length of the path but displacement in this case will be zero as the shortest way to reach the end point from the start point is to not move from that point. thus displacement results zero.

when the object is moving in a straight line distance will be equal to displacement
