It is not possible to store copper sulphate in an iron vessel for a long time as chemical reaction occurs.

  • It is not possible to store copper sulphate in an iron vessel for a long time as a chemical reaction occurs between CuSO4 and Fe (of the vessel.)
  • Due to the occurence of the chemical reaction, the stored CuSO4 changes to FeSO4, so the purpose of storing CuSO4 is not fulfilled.
  • Fe is situated above Cu in the metal activity series, due to which it can easily replace the other from its salt solution. Similarly, Fe easily replaces Cu from its salt solution (CuSO4) and forms its own solution (FeSO4).
  • More negative the value of E°(metal ion)/(metal), more easily it can replace any other metal from its salt solution (with a more positive value).
  • The reaction which occurs is as follows:

Fe + CuSO4 → FeSO4 + Cu
