is it right to call the revolt of 1857 merely a sepoy mutiny? give reason for your answer

So.. there are two ways at looking at the revolt of 1857

Firstly Veer Savarkar coined this revolt as the first war of independence owing to the fact that it was the first time that indians had understood the need to be free from the British and had acquired the courage to go against them.

While on the other hand the British gave it the name of Sepoy mutiny because the revolt was sporadic and the whole of India did not participate in the revolt. Thus it could not be called a war of independence.

It is an opiniated question.
