In fact, you will be surprised to know that jaundice is not a disease at all !It is the sign of a disease. Yellowish colouration of the skin and mucosa is known as jaundice. This sign can occur in a variety of conditions, and only some of these conditions are infectious.

We commonly mean food and water borne viral hepatitis as “jaundice” .This is communicable.

Another form of communicable jaundice occurs via sexual contact, through contaminated blood or from mother to child.

These are some common causes of infectious jaundice ,which can be classified as communicable diseases.

Leptospirosis is a relatively uncommon cause of an infectious disease which causes jaundice.

There are many non infectious cause of jaundice, some of which may even require surgery.
