Lime juice is the juice obtained from lime, a citrus fruit. This contains citric acid, and is therefore sour in taste. On the other hand, lime water is a saturated solution of a base called calcium hydroxide (chemical formula Ca(OH)2) in water. Hence, lime water is not acidic but basic in nature.

Lime water is basic in nature.

  • When lime is added to water it forms calcium hydroxide.
  • Calcium Hydroxide is basic in nature and has a pH of over 7.
  • The basicity of lime water is due to the presence of hydroxyl ion in line water.
  • However lime juice is basic in nature due to the presence of citric acid.
