There is no difference between Pongal, lohri and Makar Sankranti. Just the names are different but the festive is same. It is the time when first harvest of the year in most of the parts of India where the food grains are worshipped in different ways.
In the evening of Lohri, the fire of the bonfire blazes high and a circle of warmth surrounds the people on this cold winter's night. The wood crackles and burns and the people gather around, their faces glowing red and gold. Lohri is essentially a festival dedicated to the Sun god. As the Sun moves towards the Uttarayan, the new configuration bestows warmth to mother earth. The seeds that lay dormant for the want of heat, now sprout forth.
On the occasion of Baisakhi, Hindus take a holy dip in river Ganga. This festival is celebrated across Punjab and a number of processions called Nagar Kirtan led by five Khalsas dressed as Panj Pyaare passes across the streets in the early hours of the day. Sikhs visit Gurudwara and a number of fairs are organized across Punjab where festivities are observed through the folk dance Bhangra along with songs, amusement rides and good food.
