Thermite has many legitimate uses in industry, such as welding railroad tracks and construction/demolition work.

No, of course not. It’s widely used. I even recall my chemistry teacher demonstrating the reaction in the laboratory (for obvious reasons it wasn’t an experiment entrusted to schoolchildren).
In any event, the raw ingredients for the reaction are simply powdered aluminium and powdered iron oxide, both of which are freely available and have several uses.
I assume this question has come about because of one of those fantastical conspiracy theories that claims it was the use of the thermite reaction that brought down the twin towers.
