Look at it this way:   Why in hell is Japan's marriage rate going do down in the present century?   Because :  - Women there have gotten more independent, same as men, and just like men, they too can opt for just carnal needs without any ties of affection  - Men, too, have gotten more focused on their financial enrichment, and less than 35 per cent, would have the guts to raise a family even  - Both men and women, now a days, don't have neither the time to stay together or be tied up, nor the same to raise children, the world's gotten to the point when you have the benefits of everything without raising a family, you can even be a single parent.  Now, compare this with the whole world, recent surveys have revealed that with each year, the ration of men willing to marry to that of the same not ready for any sorta marriage in any point of their life has been depleting, for the age group of 20 to 40.   History of marriage :  Well, I read this one very interesting article, that marriage came into existence just because at that point , our forefathers (and foremothers, lol) needed to raise a family amidst the dangers of wildlife, climatic catastrophes, epidemics, and all such potential threats to their babies, hence in order for the proper nourishment and protection of their progenies , they, instead of like their ape-sorta-ancesters-who-mated-with-any-number-of-partners-and-the-mothers-carried-the-children-along-with-her, they assembled into groups, into pairs, to take care of their progeny, that's how family, and partnership came into existence, and we pretty much evolved from that to develop emotional attachment to the partners, for, of course, survival of our progeny, as aforthmentioned. Then the authorities forged it into a more formal pact, the procedures of marriage and courtship, and what not. Now, we are at the time, when our child, needs the least care, I mean - a human child born in this century certainly has less threats to him, than when he had in the, say the stone age, making it obvious, that there seems no particular reason for a marriage now, besides of course - for the sake of the product of evolution, emotional attachment!     A MAN/WOMAN DEFINITELY IS MORE ATTACHED TO HIS/HER OWN CHILD THAN ANY SORT OF SEXUAL/LIFE PARTNER  I believe by the end of this century, or maybe before, there would not be a thing called marriage left, basically, we are getting into the era of single parenting apes again !
