Is nylon waterproof?

Nylon is not exactly water proof. It is actually contrary to it. It absorbs moisture or water molecules very easily. This is due to the hydrogen bonds present in the backbone. These hydrogen bond readily reacts with moisture to form intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds. This is the reason why normally some of the articles made from nylon develop a yellowish colour with time. This has a plasticizing effect on the polymer as a result of which the mechanical properties such as tensile strength, modulus decreases and impact strength increases. This has a negative influence in many engineering applications where nylons are normally used. To reduce this effect normally reinforcements such as glass fibers are added.
