Organizational development and organizational change are terms that are often used interchangeably. But one is really the result of the other.

Organizational Change is often the result of organizational development initiatives or interventions (processes, tasks or directed actions that are used to cause a specific result). The rate of change is increasing faster than at any time in recent history. So, organizations are having to get better, more nimble and even anticipate change. A field of practice called Organizational Change Management (OCM) has emerged to enable organizations to meet the constant need for transformation and evolution.
As with many business concepts, it boils down to context. Let’s say your organization is going through some big shift. The term that would most likely be used to describe what how to successfully navigate through that shift is Organizational Change or Organizational Change Management. In order to make that transition successfully, it is likely that some organizational development tools will be used. However, organizational development can be used without a change precipitating it. But will often cause change.
