These are in fact, at room temperature, solid solutions thus homogenous mixtures. This is done either to change the color of the gold, or to harden it, making it more durable and suitable for ornaments. It also becomes less expensive. The usual term indicating the purity of gold is ‘karat’. Pure gold is 24-karat. Other usual concentrations are 75% gold - 18 karat, 58.3% gold - 14 karat and 41.7% gold - 10 karat.
