• Polio is a virus-borne illness with a high risk of infection.
• It infiltrates the neurological system and can render a person completely paralysed in just a few hours.
• The virus is passed from person to person mostly by the faecal-oral route or, less commonly, through a shared vehicle (such as contaminated water or food) and multiplies in the gut.
• Fever, lethargy, headache, vomiting, neck stiffness, and limb discomfort are the first signs of the illness.
