It is a necessary activity, and in that sense desirable, for the sake of society, when performed properly.

But an ironic aspect of politics is that those who personally find it as a desirable activity are usually the least qualified; and those who personally find it undesirable are in fact the best qualified. The former are driven by ambitious pursuit of selfish interests, at the expense of public interest. The latter reluctantly set aside personal interests for the sake of the public. This observation goes back at least to Plato’s Republic.

So it is both desirable and undesirable.
