Especially in the USA, if the protest has a common goal, and is set about properly, it can be considered patriotic.
For example, the US would not have become a nation, if they didn't:
1) Protest British rule
2) Protest British imposing strict trade on them
3) Protest British taxes.
So, protest, in a sense, is not unpatriotic, if it is used correctly and for the right reasons.
