First of all you need to understand that psychology is a very diverse field. There is no person who is just a “psychologist”. Since psychology is the study of human mind and behavior, it has numerous applications in all walks of life- work, family, relationships, sports and so on. As a result, one has the option to choose from a varied range of specializations, including counseling psychology, clinical psychology, organizational/industrial psychology etc.

I will try to give you an approximate range that you can expect from the most popular fields:

Clinical Psychology: This field deals with the diagnosis, understanding and treatment of psychological disorders. Clinical psychologists do amazing work with people who have difficulty dealing with life. They work in hospitals, drug rehabilitation centres, NGOs etc. Since they are so essential to tackling the problem of mental disorders in our country, one would expect that they would earn well. However, it’s a sad state of affairs that clinical psychologists currently earn measly amounts of money. The starting range for clinical psychologists with an M.Phil (that is 7 years of study) is just around 30,000–35,000. With a few years of experience, you can expect to earn around 50,000–60,000.

Counseling Psychology- Counseling psychologists helps clients deal with personal and interpersonal problems that they face in daily life. These are people who don’t suffer from any major mental health issues, but may have certain issues in their daily functioning, which they are unable to deal on their own. There are many variants of counseling psychology- career, relationship/marital, school, rehabilitation etc. Counselors work in therapy centres, private setups, NGOs, organizations etc. Counseling psychologists start at around 25,000–30,000, but can expect to earn around 60,000–70,000 with some experience. Counselors with their private setups can earn much better, and generally charge patients on an hourly basis.

Organizational/Industrial Psychology- I/O psychologists apply psychological principles to the workplace. They study workplace issues at the individual, group and organizational level, in order to enhance the productivity of the employees and ultimately, the organization. People with specializations in organizational behavior can work as human resource development specialists, organizational consultants, HR managers, etc. The salary ranges for this field are much better, and the starting salaries generally range from 30,000 to even 60,000–70,000. This field has much scope as organizations are beginning to realize the importance of the ‘individual’ to the functioning of their business.

I hope that this answers your question.

All the best!
