Answer: raduim is a radio active element . so it produces radition ( alpha decay) which is not a visible ray so it cannot be visible to human eye. but when kept in open air radium is seen to have glow because its radiation ionise nitrogen and thereby making nitrogen to glow.

moreover radium is mixed with some other chemicals like phosphorus to make luminous paint because these chemical absorbs radiation and emit it as visible light
