Is rusting important? Why/why not

rusting is sometimes important and sometimes not.in some cases for example aluminium,it reacts with water and starts rusting and forms a layer of aluminium oxide which gets deposited as a layer on top of aluminium and prevents further rusting from taking place.

2Al+3H2O gives Al2O3+3H2.
