Answer:

The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is a form of smooth muscle endoplasmic reticulum (ER) found in skeletal muscle that functions as a regulator of Ca2+ storage and release homeostasis during and after muscle contraction [51].

Answer:

Sarcoplasmic reticulum is a modified form of endoplasmic reticulum present in skeletal muscle. It is also present in the sarcoplasm which surrounds the myofibrils of each muscle fiber. we can also say that it is wrapped around the contractile myofilaments in the striated muscles of almost all the species.

Explanation:

  • It has a specialized organization which very important in muscle contraction as it helps in release, storage and reuptake of calcium or control the cytosolic calcium during contraction. Extensive network of sarcoplasmic reticulum is can be seen in muscle types that are rapidly contracting.
  • SR is essential in also transmitting electrical impulse
  • Increase the efficiency of calcium cycle-In the skeletal muscles, calcium cycle is very efficient in the muscle fiber. As there is very less exchange between the cytoplasm and the extracellular spaces. Therefore all the calcium that was released before, returns back to the lumen of sarcoplasmic reticulum on time through the calcium pump which forms 90% or more than 90% of intrinsic membrane proteins present in the membranes of free Sarcoplasmic reticulum.
  • Provide majority of calcium ions in striated muscles- Calcium ions are needed to activate the myofilaments and to bring Calcium ions from the myoplasm for relaxation to occur.
