He is both a victim and a villian....in the story of Merchant of Venice....

Shylock is both a villain and a victim.  

He is a victim of Antonio's hurtful insults. he becomes a villain by taking revenge on Antonio, by asking him for a pound of his flesh when he is unable to pay off his debt.
