Is sound a mechanical wave? How will you demonstrate this? Draw a neat diagram to establish the same.

Sound is a form of energy which gives us sensation of hearing.Sound is a form of mechanical longitudinal waves which require material medium to travel like Solids, liquids and gases.Sound waves do not travel vacuum.

Let us prove it with an experiment:

Aim: To prove Sound is a form of Mechanical  wave.

Apparatus required :Bell jar, vacuum pump, Cork, switch, electric switch

Procedure :
--->Take an electric bell and an airtight bell jar.
---> The electric bell is suspended inside the bell jar
.--->The bell jar is connected to the vacuum pump.---> If we switch on , we can hear the sound of the wave.
---> Now start removing air with the help of vacuum pump
---> Observe the sound when the air is slowly removed

Observations :
--> When the air in the jar is pumped out gradually, the sound becomes fainter.--->After sometime if we pass air inside the bell jar, we can hear a feeble sound.---> When the air is totally removed, no sound is heard.

Conclusion :
This shows that Sound cannot pass through Vacuum.Hence sound is a form of Mechanical wave.
