yes, its always longitudnal in independentl form, as it is a result of vibration of particles and requires a medium to travel.

I read your ans that it can travel as transverse in solids, but not independently as it will also be longitudnal along with transverse. .also that tranverse propagation is upto a small distance depending upon the symmetry.
