Soybean protein cannot be digested by our body easily.

  • Soy bean contains anti-enzyme agents like protease inhibitors, which inhibit the production of proteolytic enzymes in the stomach when consumed. This may result in stomach pain and bloating in some people.
  • Other components like saponins, soyatoxin, phytates, oxalates and goitrogens present in soybean prevent mineral absorption (Zn, Ca, Mg). Goitrogens especially inhibit thyroid functions.
  • In general, such components are described as ‘anti-nutrients’.

However, processes like fermentation reduces the effectiveness of the ‘anti-nutrients’, thought do not eliminate. For example, processed soy foods such as tempeh, tofu, miso and natto are easier to digest.
