Let √2 be a rational no.
√2 = p/q
(√2)² = p²/q²
2q² = p² ------ 1
So, 2 is the factor of p²
∴ 2 is the factor of p
Let p = 2m
p² = 4m²
2q² = 4m² (From - 1)
q² = 4m²/2 = 2m²
So, 2 is the factor of q²
∴ 2 is the factor of q
Now, p and q both have common factor 2
This contradiction had arisen because of our wrong supposition that √2 is a rational no..
Hence, √2 is irrational
