Farming comes in primary sector of Indian economy. Farming isn't just limited for survival. Surplus farming is important for our country mainly due to following reasons :-

1. Foreign Trade

India has a tremendous scope of foreign trade in case of agricultural production. India is on first rank for the largest producer of jute. This is because of surplus farming. It isn't only for some limited crops like jute but also for every kind of crop production in India which are to be exported abroad. Surplus farming increase foreign trade and national income as well.

2. Self Dependency

In early 90's India didn't have proper policies for increasing agricultural production. There was no surplus farming. In such a situation, India became dependent on other countries to import some farming production for the compliance of starvation in India. But due to surplus farming, India stepped forward on the threshold of self dependency.

3. Employment

In surplus farming, where agriculture has become a big business, number of people get employment. Not only poor peasants but also factory workers are getting work. Surplus farming has reduced unemployment rate in India on the immense extent.
