Answer:

A direct battle never happened between Surya and Indra. First, let’s make some points clear. Surya was the eldest son of Aditi and, the Vaman avatar of Vishnu was the last. Indra was somewhere in the middle. So, they’re brothers.

Many refer to such fiction by comparing the most powerful weapons possessed and used against the more powerful opponents of either to end the argument. The most commonly used one is, to end the argument by showing Indra possessing Vajra which has an essence that, in general, is compared to that of Sudharshan Chakra's and to that of Trisul's. That Vajra is donated to Indra by Dadachi’s sacrifice of his bones and thus his life, on the direction of Vishnu to Indra and hence, not his( Indra's) innate ability. Indra being the king of deities doesn’t mean he’s the most powerful in them. None can be stronger than Brahma, Vishnu, Maheswara trio. So, the answer to the question that Indra being the strongest is never ‘Yes’.

Now, many tend to compare these gods’ patents by the prowess of their sons i.e. Surya’sson Karna, Indra’s son Arjuna in many cases. Now, since Karna never defeated Arjuna, people again take the easy way out as to show that the seed of Indra gave rise to a more powerful warrior than to that of Surya’s and again end the argument. Karna never defeating Arjuna is true because of many( hell’ot) reasons. If it wasn’t for Karna’s life tragedy, he has gotten more potential than many well-known characters of Mahabharat, including Arjuna( as said by many high-end characters of Mahabharat). I know people who side for Arjuna’s battle prowess ONLY, can’t agree to this fact. While siding with Arjuna for his nature is the intent of the text, many tend towards Arjuna for his battle prowess ONLY because again, it’s heroic that way. So, for those who believe that, follow the battle streak. Hanuman can easily defeat Indra. While you say that Hanuman Mistaking the Sun for a Mango to even eat it makes Surya weak… Veerabhadra can defeat Lord Hanuman. While it was seen that both had equal power, Veerabhadra’s extraordinary battle experience might easily overwhelm Lord Hanuman. But, Lord Shaniswar, son of Lord Surya, defeated Veerabhadra and so, to tackle him, Lord Shiva himself comes to battle. Meaning, Lord Surya’s seed gave rise to a warrior who defeated one part of Shiva himself and so can defeat Lord Hanuman too. Meaning, comparison of deities through the potents of theirseeds might be off sometimes. Personally, I believe that Surya was far more powerful than Indra because, Sun was once the source of all the planets( the start of this Solar System) and, Indra, Varuna, Vayu, Agni etc. gods were under Earth’s boundaries with exceptional up spikes of some powers compared to Surya's, while Surya is an ever astronomically more power emitting source in many of the remaining traits.

Many texts say that the Sudharshan Chakra and Trisul were made by Vishwakarma by, rearing some part of Surya’s potent. Meaning, Surya's affluence was so great that the mostpowerful of weapons were made out of him. His seeds gave rise to Yama Dharma Raj, Aswini twins, Shaniswar, etc.

He's like most worshipped deity once upon a time but, as time passed, many people stopped worshipping him the way their ancestors used to.
