For an electric current to flow through, the current needs a source and a return path. In this case the source is line wire and the return path is neutral wire. That is why when you are grounded and touch neutral wire you don't get electric shock (most of the time). So for an electric device to work, electric current has to flow from live wire through the device and exit out through neutral(direction of current is opposite but just for easy explanation I go with this logic). Be it single, two or three phase the same flow of current applies
