The story ends after Billy asks the landlady if anyone else has visited the hotel in the last 2-3 years, then the landlady answers,"Only you." ... It is also clear to the reader that the landlady may have in fact poisoned Billy with the tea that she has given him. He does after all get a taste of bitter almonds.

yes the land lady lesson teach us the reality that one shouldn't be guillable to trust anyone easily though the ending may not tell it explicitly but it gives us a hint about bitter almonds(Cyandie).
So yes unlike most stories since it gives us the reality of life. The stories ending is apt.
