Career After finishing his education, Sangma entered politics in the late 1990s, managing his father P. A. Sangma's campaign for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). [5] In 2004, he ran for office and lost by 182 votes. He and his brother James, both NCP members, were first elected to the State Assembly in the 2008 state elections. He later held several significant portfolios in the state cabinet, including the finance, power, tourism, GAD, and IT. Within 10 days of taking office as a minister, he presented the first annual budget for Meghalaya.Sangma served as the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly's Leader of Opposition from 2009 until 2013. Following the passing of his father earlier that year, he was chosen as the National People's Party (NPPnational )'s president in March 2016. [8] He won the Tura by-election to the Lok Sabha in May of that year with a record-breaking 1.92 lakh votes.
