Carnallite is the ore which contains both K and Mg.

  • Carnallite is an ore used for the industrial extraction of both potassium (K) as well as Magnesium (Mg).
  • The chemical formula of the ore can be represented as KCl.MgCl2.6H2O. Both the metals are found in the form of chlorides in the ore.
  • The ore is diluted to form a solution which is heated to over 105⁰C and cooled to produce crystals of KCl. MgCl2 can be extracted by electrolytic reduction of molten KCl-MgCl2 complex.
