Akbar introduced the idea of “Sulh-i-Kul”, which meant universal peace.  Akbar was highly interested in religion and philosophy. He listened to the arguments of the Sufi and Shia divines and of other scholars as well.

Discussions with these scholars helped Akbar in introducing the idea of “Sulh-i-kul “. It described a  harmonious relationship among different religions. This policy formed the basis for Akbar's policy of religious toleration.

This led Akbar to formulate the idea of Sulh-i-kul.  Akbar introduced governance guidelines by using a policy of tolerance, based on a system of ethics – honesty, justice, and peace. He formed this vision of governance with the help of Abul Fazl, a poet in his court. Some scholars are known to equate ‘Din-i-Ilahi’ with ‘Sulh-i-kul’.

The main features of Sulh-i-kul are-

  • Freedom to express.
  • No discrimination on the basis of religion or race.
  • Universal peace.
  • Secularity in government.
  • Religious tolerance.

It seems very much applicable in the present Indian system as gives every Indian the right to equality and the freedom to practice and propagate any religion he wishes to.
