I would say we are slightly before the inflection point of an S-shaped curve. If we look at the long period graph of human population vs time it looks like an exponential J curve.

The last phase is even faster than an exponential growth since improvements in medicine and sanitation in the last couple of centuries increased our growth rate dramatically. However if we look at the recent past (last few decades), the growth doesn’t seem exponential at all.

It looks more like linear growth. But if we are maintaining a constant growth rate with an increasing population, it could only mean that a measure like growth rate per person is coming down. Such a behaviour is never showed in exponential growth, but near the inflection point of a logistic S curve, one can observe a linear regime. Most estimates do suggest that the human population will max out.

But unlike logistic growth where lack of resources limits the growth, here better education and access to contraceptives is doing the job of limiting population.
