Catabolism is the process of breakdown of complex food molecules or a anabolic process to produce chemical or potential energy.

Explanation:

It is a part of the process of metabolism in which the complex molecules are transformed into simple ones so as to produce the required energy amount. For example, digestion process of food substances is one kind of the process of catabolism. Catabolism can be described completely by the following three stages:

1. First, is the food digestion. Here, the organic and large molecules which the cell is unable to absorb directly such as lipids, polysaccharides and proteins are broken down by digestion into small substances.

2. Second is the energy release. After the break down of molecules is completed, this are then taken up or abosrber by the cells of the body and again transforms to more tiny kind of molecules due to which some amount of energy is released.

3. Energy which is released is then stored in the cells of the body.

Few examples of catabolism are: citric acid cycle, breaking down fats into fatty acids in the adipose tissues and glycolysis.
