Is the reaction between magnesium (Mg) and aluminium chloride (AlCl3) possible? If yes, give reason . Also write the balanced chemical equation for this. [PLEASE TELL THE REASON]

  • Metal reactivity series plays a very important role in any chemical reaction. To see whether the given reaction is feasible or not we see metal reactivity series.
  •       The order of reactivity series is as follows:

                                   Potassium

                                    Sodium

                                   Lithium

                                   Calcium

                                    Magnesium

                                    Aluminum

  • Here Aluminum is below Magnesium which states that it is less reactive than magnesium. Therefore displacement reaction will take place and Mg will displace Al and form the compound with the chloride, Thus the following will be a chemical reaction.

                        AlCl₃+Mg = MgCl₂+ Al

  • MgCl₂ is a white colorless crystal.
  • AlCl₃ is a pale yellow color compound
