Is there a difference between 'applying a force' and doing work? Give reason
for your answer.

Yes,there is a difference.,

If there is no displacement but force is applied,the work done would be zero. For example,if you're carrying a luggage and doesn't move it with respect to environment,then the work done would be zero because if though you are applying force but the object(luggage) is not getting displaced.
