Single crystalline materials have more strength than the polycrystalline materials. Therefore, cracks are expected to occur in polycrystalline materials faster than in single crystalline materials. This is because polycrystalline materials are not homogeneous, i.e., have grain boundaries, second phase particles & have microstructural defects, i.e., dislocations in a comparison to single crystalline materials.

A crystalline material consisting of many grains of different orientation (like a ceramic) is called polycrystalline, or alternately if your crush a single crystal, you will obtain.
