hey friend here is your answer...
the main difference between a soap and detergent is that form slimy layer with hard water whereas detergent does not form it and detergent is able to produce lather with hard water but so is unable to do so. soap is salt of a long chain fatty Acid which is generally obtained from Natural Sources such as palmitic acid ,stearic acid,etc. but detergents are sulphonate salts of long chain fatty acids that are always synthetic in origin and cannot be degraded by the environment. soaps can be degraded by environment but the process is very slow.
