1934, was widely used to measure the magnitude of an earthquake. But it does not provide accurate estimates for large
magnitude earthquakes. So nowadays the Moment Magnitude scale is preferred. It
works for a wider range of earthquake sizes. It is based on the total moment
release of the earthquake. Moment is the product of the distance a fault moved
and the force required to move it.
