Answer:

Many cities in the usa had areas served by a DC power plant. They put out three wire 110/220 volt DC power with the center grounded. One hot side was + 110 volts and the other hot side was -110 volts with 220 volts between them. When I attended the Milwaukee school of engineering in the 1964 to 1965 school year, the two older buildings were served with 110/220 three wire DC. It came from a power plant over by the Milwaukee river. The same plant supplied steam for steam heat. I remember that if you tried to unscrew a light bulb while it was on, it began to arc instead of going out. The barber shop I went to while there was also served by DC and had my hair cut by electric cutters running on DC. Any time a building changed ownership, the new owners had to remove the DC wiring and replace it with AC. By 2000 most DC plants and systems had been retired. Now the only DC is used by rail roads and they have their own rectifier sub stations to supply their third rails or overhead lines.

I hope it might help you
