Answer:

As far as the Indian education system is concerned, there are two types of English courses.

Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English (Hon) - It is the more rigorous and academically involved course, and most people who are serious about a career in academics (or even journalism) take it up.

BA in English (General) - It is a simpler course involving often lesser number of papers and a simpler framework. It is ideal for those seeking a graduation degree with a good knowledge of English and/or pursuing a Hon in some other stream.

You'd often be asked to take up General courses along with Hon in an Hon course. So if you're doing English Hon you could take History General (I'm partial towards history). If you're doing History Hon, you could take English General. If you're studying for only a General degree, you could take English General with History General and say Political Science General.
