Let the father's age be 3 x.

Hence the sum of two children's ages = x

After 5 years , the father's age becomes 3 x + 5

The children's age

x is the sum of 2 children .

Let 2 children's age be a and b

x = a + b

After 5 years they become a + 5 , b + 5

Sum = a + 5 + b + 5 = a + b + 10

       = x + 10

Linear equation

The father's age becomes twice sum of children

==> 3 x + 5 = 2 ( x + 10 )

==> 3 x + 5 = 2 x + 20

==> x = 20 - 5

==> x = 15

Father's age = 3 x = 3 * 15

                              = 45

The age of father was 45

Hope it helps
