Start with exploratory analysis on the two columns (X, Y)

Understanding the characteristics of each field (e.g. probability distribution or density function) and basic statistics, test for outliers (try histogram or boxplots of X and Y)

Compute the correlation between X and Y

Plot a scatter diagram of X vs Y to visualize the correlation coefficient

Fit a linear regression line X ~ P_0 + P_1Y or conversely Y ~ P_0 + P_1X to answer questions about how does X change with respect to Y? or what would Y yield for a given unit of X?

If the relationship between X and Y is somewhat non-linear, maybe you could fit a polynomial/cubic regression function similar to the ones above but with additional terms for the polynomial variables.

If relation is really non-linear, you could try a regression tree (e.g. Decision Trees) or spline-based generalised additive models (GAMs).
