In simple terms, what I understand is that heart beat rate is a factor of rate of metabolism relative to body weight. Higher the rate of metabolism, higher will be the heart rate. Generally, larger animals have a lower metabolism rate compared to smaller animals and therefore larger animals have a slower heartbeat.
