According to Hindu mythology, red is the colour of power and vermilion represents the female energy of Sati and Parvati. Mythology says that Sati was an ideal Indian wife as she gave her life to safe her husband’s.
Religious scriptures also say that Goddess Parvati, who also used to wear sindoor (orkumkum), grants Akhand Soubhagyato those women who wear sindoor in the forehead, which basically means that it is a symbol for the long life of a woman’s husband. It is also considered auspicious and signifies good fortune.
What science says: Ayurveda says that putting the red vermillion powder on the forehead activates the chakras in the forehead, which leads to the flow of positive energy and bestows the couple with prosperity and good health.
Traditionally sindoor was prepared using mercury, turmeric, chandan and lime, which also benefitted your health. Mercury in particular helps ease stress, keeps the brain active, controls the blood pressure, and activates the sexual drive. While everyone knows about turmeric’s anti-bacterial properties chandan or sandalwood is renowned for its ‘cooling’ properties.
