Answer:
Any change of state involves addition of heat (heating) or removal of heat (cooling).
So, during heating, we add heat to the system from outside - like a flame for example.
During cooling, we remove the heat from the system by external cooling.
If a system is not closed but is open to the environment, then heat gain / loss takes place by one or more of the three processes - conduction, convection and radiation.
