Nitrogen is an electronegative element and do not easily give up electrons.
It craves for 3 electrons with a valency -3.
But in this case, it is giving out an extra electron and acquires a stable state. For every element, when a stable state is achieved, no amount of extra energy is provided for that. With this 4th electron, it had some extra energy which is carried out by the electron by itself when stable state is achieved. Energy is taken out. Therefore, it might be an exothermic reaction
