Vinca rosea(Catharanthus rosea) is an evergreen, ornamental herb that belongs to the family Apocynacea. The species is generally syncarpous and dithecous.

  • The Androecium of this species is made up of 5 stamens. Anthers are dithecous( having two chambers) and sagittate( spear-shaped). The stamens are polyandrous, epipetalous(attatched to the corolla) with short filaments.
  • The Gynoecium is bicarpellary ( two carpels ) and syncarpous( carpels are fused together or connate ) but in some species apocarpus, free, the superior ovary is found. Many ovules are present inside the ovary and the placentation( arrangement of ovules within the placenta) is marginal.
  • Nectaries are also found anteroposterior to the ovary.
  • fruit type is a follicle.
  • Vincristine and Vinblastin are the two major anticancer drugs obtained from the Vinca rosea.
