Hi friend,
Thanks for asking a good question.
This dour is when having to all the scientists especially in the field of microbiology having yet too!!
This is because the behaviour of virus caused a great confusion to all the researchers.
Because virus lives as a dead outside the host and suddenly changes as a living organism when it is gone to any living organisms.
SO ONLY IT IS PLACED AS A threshold of both living and noon living things showing the characteristics of both!!
hope this helps you!!!!

virus is both living and non living organism
Viruses are not alive because they are not composed of cells, they lack of the properties that scientists associate with living things (or organisms) and they do not reproduce (only without the aid of a host cell).
AND ALSO
They are called alive because they have the ability to replicate, and produce progeny. However, they can be easily crystallized and no living thing has been known to be able to do that. Plus, they cant survive without a host.
