You can only measure this when current is flowing through the diode. ... The current passing through resistor and diode is the same. The total voltage drop across the resistor and diode will be the same. The LIGHT EMITTING DIODE has a much larger voltage drop (about 1.5V - 3.0 V) than a 'normal' diode.
